♥ Welcome to the real world. posted October 22, 2009, 5:08 am
Sometimes the most true of words can come from the tween authors of slash fanfiction.
He doesn’t want to be an early-morning booty call. He doesn’t want to be a hobby, or a fuck-buddy or anyone’s right hand. He sleeps around because he’s looking, because Max wants to believe that someday, somewhere, he’ll find someone worth quitting for; he wants to believe that someday he’ll stop being the third (or fifth or seventh) wheel and find someone worth keeping around.
Okay, so his methods are a bit fucked. Sue him.
So Maxxie gets around. He gets around with drunken bar paramours who buy him one too many drinks and them press him into corners and suck bruising kisses onto the skin of his throat.
Sometimes they’re kind, considerate; other times, they’re not at all what Max needs. Sometimes he comes out sated, other times bleeding, and none of those times he ever tells his friends about. It’s killing him, maybe, one little death at a time, but it makes him feel so alive.
***
So let them call him slut. Let them judge and catcall and jeer until their faces turn blue and their breath runs out. Maxxie doesn’t care. He knows what he’s doing.

♥ Of unusual dreams posted October 11, 2009, 5:11 pm
It has always been my belief that dreams are derived from the subconscious mind, so thoughts that dominate my head during my waking hours would turn up in slumber, perhaps even reveal a bit of truth to the chaos by projecting what is the most important.
So it comes as a surprise that I would dream of you, holding me.

What I often see is that people are frightened of fashion and that, because it’s scares them or makes them feel insecure, they put it down.
On the whole, people that say… demeaning things about our world, I think that’s usually because they feel, in some ways, excluded, or not part of the core group. So as a result, they just mock it.
Just because you like to put on a beautiful Carolina Herrera dress or a pair of J brand blue jeans instead of something basic from K Mart, it doesn’t mean you’re a dumb person.
There is something about fashion that can make people very nervous.
–Anna Wintour, opening of The September Issue
Is it just me or does Anna come off as, surprisingly, insecure?

He reminds me of you, both tall, thin, pretty average looking. And the way he walks
Yet you are so happy and cheerful, the mental picture I have of you inside my head is of you smiling.
I want to be happy too, in spite of all the downs in my life; heck, you’ve been through so much more shit on a different magnitude altogether, and yet that smile is there.
Confidence seems to radiate from you, despite… well, everything. You write so well.
I think you’re an inspiration.

♥ Of fame and fashion, Lady Gaga posted September 15, 2009, 3:33 am
When Just Dance first made its debut on the Play mix list, the gay community was quickly to adopt her songs and absorb themselves into the way she dictates her culture through her songs in her album, aptly titled The Fame: boys, money, sex, disco balls, glitter and fame. She became the icon of an idol among many of the young boys.
Ever since Just Dance, Gaga has had runaway successes with each of her following singles: Pokerface, Love Game and now, Paparazzi. The story she speaks is a controversial one, full of sexual implications and innuendoes (we all know sex sells), although not so in your face direct like what Katy Perry did with her words. This opens up a whole new market of listeners and fans: people who could care less for the lyrics and what they mean, but listen to music because it sounds good. How many of you really knew what Spice Girl’s “Wannabe” actually meant? The same parallel could be drawn for the equally blind and oblivious people who are crazy about K-pop or J-pop.
My opinion of Lady Gaga has always been a mixed one.
I love her spectacular showmanship, the amount of effort she puts in for each, individual performance that she gives, the amount of preparation and money she gives in to make each and every show she does, a unique and memorable one. How many established artists are actually capable of doing that? Lady Gaga isn’t even established, she’s new.
I started to despise her mega mainstream pop culture, where rabid fans who don’t know the first thing about what makes her great, scream and declare their utmost undying love for her like mindless unintelligent drones seeking to be “cool” just because those who truly are cool, like her.
“oh ya ya ladie gaga she is like best i like her so much ya poker face dance and love games”
Do you understand what she stands for? Do you know where she comes from?
Also the blatantly ignorant, who criticize and laugh at her outrageous outfits, just because she dares to support and wear some of the more risqué pieces legendary designers come out with (her three VMA outfits last night were from Jean Paul Gaultier) means she’s at the forefront of fashion. And where are you?
♥ The VMAs were a publicity stunt. posted September 15, 2009, 1:59 am
Fancy some of Lady Gaga’s blood and seeing her crucifixion?
So if you haven’t heard about the whole Taylor Swift/Kanye West/Beyonce drama, here it is in two video parts: Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for “Best Female Video” which was interrupted by Kanye West saying Beyonce should have won, which she did, wining “Video of the Year”. (I’m linking to Mashable because MTV doesn’t allow outside U.S. views– seriously who still does that?)

The wee hours of the morning sure passes by fast; it seemed like it was only a few minutes ago I was happily talking to various people on MSN, making impromptu plans for tomorrow night.
Tomorrow night. The stage is set, what will happen?
In a few hours it would be the break of dawn. I need to get to class tomorrow, for the last deadline is finally upon us, for after which we shall be free of the extreme boredom that is P2. I look at the other courses in design school, they are all pressed for time, stressed out and I wonder what I am doing. I love that monster known as stress, perhaps it is why I don’t even bother starting on my work until the last last minutes of it. The thrill is extremely fulfilling. This only happens with school work, I can be so dedicated to other tasks, set on completing it. I guess it’s the motivation, alignment of goals and what I hope to achieve. School work just isn’t that.
Abigale’s birthday is tomorrow. I hope all the plans for her gets executed smoothly, we all know what happened with Zhiyang’s fiasco of timing with Wilson’s class, hahaha. Anyway I thought I’d post the collage I did for Zhiyang, cause it kind of inspired the style of this blog’s new layout, and the textured paper background is the same.
Shi’ai asked Kelly if we ever sleep. I say no, nocturnal, insomnia, driven designers is what we are, as someone posted on his/her status: “Sleep is for the weak”. But speaking of which, I better force myself into slumber if I want to wake up any time before 12. Ciao.

♥ Of Microsoft graphics and iconography posted September 10, 2009, 5:23 pm
Here’s a rather nice collage of various Windows related iconography– Office, accompanied of course by the Word icon, which has become synonymous with anything to do with word processing, sometimes even more than that; then what I presume to be Media, represented by the iconic blue “E” of Internet Explorer (people have come to know this as the Internet itself, that’s how much that stupid E transcends), and various random appearances of the Windows Media Player icon as well; then there is but of course, Windows Live Messenger, formerly known as MSN; lastly to join the Microsoft army of giant catalysts, Facebook. Strangely enough, Microsoft does not directly own Facebook (they invested quite a bit moolah and is one of the major partner advertisers), but Facebook has become so important that it’s there along with the three other pillars of Microsoft’s dominating products.

As you can probably observe, another redesign of the Life blog has gone live, sort of. I’ll be updating the sidebar as time permits. Currently I have “The Fame” by Lady Gaga on repeat. Fame fame baby, we live for the fame, isn’t it a shame shame, in it for the fame fame?
♥ Of “Fashin” movies and italics posted September 10, 2009, 12:50 am
I’m actually inspired to write again, to test out this new plugin called After the Deadline.
Italicizing words that are between (I know there’s a correct literature term for this but I forgot), e.g. Coco avant Chanel, makes it look so much nicer don’t you all think? A real live example of this would be on Jina Bolton’s newly redesigned site, Sushi & Robots. Lots of instances of this style of type treatment there, maybe even excessively so, hah.
My mention of Coco avant Chanel (oops– Coco avant Chanel) probably suggests that I’ve seen the said movie. You guessed right, it was last Friday. There are friends of mine who absolutely loved it, even going so far to use words like “inspirational”. Personally I thought it was just alright. Not a bad movie but not that great either, much less the greatest fashion based film produced for the mainstream. That title would belong to the Devil wears Prada (DwP), which in my opinion is pretty hard to top.
The upcoming film the September Issue, which Vanity Fair acclaimed as “the real Devil wears Prada”, is no doubt a real contender to replace DwP as “the greatest fashion film ever”, given it’s endorsement and blessing by Anna Wintour… on a movie about Anna Wintour herself, and american Vogue. Fashion fiends everywhere are loving it, having made lines from the trailer into ringtones and religious worshipping of the trailer– no surprises there, the tagline is after all, “fashion is a religion, this is the bible”. Despite early rave reviews and the movie’s strong position (in the fashion scene), snippets of the movie from here and there creates doubts on how good the cinematic quality and storytelling would actually be. After all, it was filmed to be a documentary and probably lacks what a staged, acted movie can achieve. We shall see.
The September Issue is to open locally on the 10th of September, according to the film’s distributors, but no where is it listed as showing in Singapore yet. It will achieve U. S. wide release on the 11th.
Last night I had a dream, I was with a few friends and found the Comme Des Garcons guerrilla store in Singapore randomly. Went in, after looking around the store, I heard my ringtone. It had to be mine because it was custom made. Turns out it was, one of the staff in the store had it, I asked him how it got it. He pointed to one of the woman staff in the store and said she found it.
Then it occurred to me, this is too good to be true, maybe it is just a dream. I woke up.
Tim woke up very late today, precisely at 2pm. Actually he could have woken up earlier but he decided to stay in bed. He woke up to various miss calls and messages from people after plugging his phone into the charger realizing it went dead over the night.
Rushed/bussed to school on 69, met Bear and Gee at the school bus stop, got on 23 to Bugis, for a short interview with Simon, a previous lecturer from Chemistry. Met Huiling at the Bugis MRT, walked apprehensively towards Jln. Pisang, where the Chemistry and Point of Contact with Simon was to be at. Decided to take a shit break as we walked two blocks at Raffles Hospital– Bear made a passing comment that hospitals are not a place to visit right now because of the Swine Flu. I decided that my shit business was more important and apparently Bear did too because I found him at the urinals as I exited from the cubicle.
Simon decided to run late, we were instructed to sit down at the corner kopi shop at “the other end of Jln. Pisang”, which turned out to be an indian joint of prata and other delicacies associated with the second most populated country in the whole world. Simon grandly appeared out of a cab 20 mins after the agreed time of meeting, sporting a moustache. “This is new isn’t it,” he jokingly said while stroking it. We paid the indian man for the Bandung Bear ordered and the Coke.
Proceeded towards the Chemistry office, the place is very nice, reminded me of a properly done Mindvalley office (the difference being they were not stingy enough to spend on nice furniture and interior touchups). I think the “interview”, or Q&A, as it felt like it was, went quite well.
Regrouped outside the office, Huiling had to go off. Me, Bear and Gee decided to pay Haji Lane a visit and maybe later head to LaSalle. Randomly bumped into Kelly, Lyn and Josh at Haji, outside Duplex (where I saw yet another rainbow belt– for $20. The other ones were spotted at Deja Vu Vintage for $25 and another on JK’s waist). Kel just finished her interview with the Loft boss– went there later to check it out, the place is quite nice, they now expanded to have this public lounge area with guitar hero and other recreational things? Saw a Friegtag big sized tote going for $200, quite worth it actually.
Gee decided to head home after Haji, so me and Bear went on to LaSalle to meet up with Syahid who was sitting in for the Fashion Dip. gallery that day. Saw this piece by a Daniel Loh that can transform from a bag into a garment. Greatly impressed, I can’t even begin to imagine how to draft that thing. Zhiyang and Shiai was there too, Syahid closed up at 8pm, so we decided to head on to the supposedly highly confidential Club21 sale that no one knows about (yeah– how many of you reading this got wind of it?)
On a side note there is now a really cool café bar bistro thing at one of the ground floor LaSalle galleries. Very cool, it’s called “15 minutes”.
Took a bus to Suntec and walked through Millenia to get to the Flyer then to the former F1 Pit Building where the sale was at, it turned out to be over already at 8pm. Severely disappointed, but we managed to get a peek at the stuff on sale, saw racks and racks of clothing. Shiai and I were hoping for more footwear and bags. Shall return on Sunday to see what’s left– and Sunday– will go to the 8Q Fleatique as well.
Had an amazing 2 popiahs at Marina Sq foodcourt, and an ice kachang. And another ice cream as we trooped to Suntec in search for bubble tea, but it already closed. Siao, right?
Got home with Shiai on an amazingly smelly bus 67. A group of ah bengs passed by and one of them said, oh look, that girl, oh, that guy so gay. Haha.
Decided to do something about the increasing amount of clothes piling up around the room– attacked them with hangers and hung everything up in the wardrobe– oh I’m so proud of myself. Some items need to be washed!
APEL tomorrow and I have no idea what we are going to do. After APEL, head to town, club. Fun, please.
So what uh, if the going gets tough. Art has never been about being comfortable or being well off, some people make it but there are tons who don’t. But they are happy and can’t imagine themselves doing anything else.
“Success” is a relative thing. Different people measure it on so much varying levels, we often forget that because we live in a world where it is increasingly being measured by how much money you have to your name. Whatever happened to happiness being the measure of success?
An amazing rendition of Taylor Swift’s Love Story (with a bit of Coldplay’s Viva la vida thrown in) on piano and cello.
I wish I had access to a piano, even a digital one would do (no keyboards please, pedal is important to me). I’m actually sneaking minutes of play time every few months by going into a Best Denki to have a go on their display pianos, to satisfy that itch my fingers have for keys.
I never set about to learn Flash because there are various reasons contributing to its imminent demise in the near future of the Internet, so why bother?
But today, because of classes, I created my first Flash-based navigation menu.
Companies committed to a culture of antidesign (also consultants like Jakob Nielsen) may occasionally succeed in the marketplace, but they do so in spite of their antidesign, not because of it. Of course we can’t prove that; we can’t run a controlled experiment, let alone 41 of them with distinct shades of blue. It is merely one of those things a visually literate person knows. The fact that you don’t know it, or you deny it’s important, or deny it even can be known goes to show you really are better suited to programming a computer all day than dealing with actual human beings.
I had a weird dream last night. There were aunties all over carrying the same green bag that I have, the same design and various shapes and forms. I was mortified.

there was this guy dressed in an elaborate chinese looking military jacket, round tortoise shell frames, red pixie boots (lol) amongst screaming kids, aunties (and uncles), bengs, fashion posers, and senior citizens trying to cut the queue spanning around the perimeter of the store.
the look of distress on his face was priceless and all telling: it was then i decided i wouldn’t go through the same walk of shame to get in, i wasn’t that desperate.
dear uniqlo, if you don’t do something drastic to fix this, bad things are going to happen. i’m sure i’m not the only one who felt this way seeing the disaster that was the opening of your flagship at 313 somerset this morning.
