Headings should reflect the logical structure of the document; they should not be used simply to add emphasis, or to change the font size.

Apple users liked Apple’s system, while Windows users liked Microsoft’s system. This is not just standard fanboyism; it reflects the fact that when you ask people to choose a style or design that they prefer, unless they are trained, they will generally choose the one that looks most familiar.

Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But, of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works. To design something really well, you have to ‘get it’. You really have to grok what’s it all about.

1. First, kill all your meetings; they waste employees’ time. “Interruption is the biggest enemy of productivity,” he says. “We stay away from each other as much as we can to get more stuff done.” Use asynchronous communication and software instead to exchange information, ideas and solutions.
2. Next, dump half your projects to focus on the core of your business. Too much time and effort are wasted on second-tier objectives.
3. Third, let your employees decide when and where to work so they can be both efficient and happy. As long as their fingers are near a keyboard, they could as easily be in Caldwell, Idaho, as in Chicago.

The memory arrived today, so it was off with the lid to begin the “two minute job” which was actually plugging in the chips. And I saw what Sony had done. And I said a naughty word.

I’m a great fan of good design. Unfortunately this means that I hate badly designed stuff. Hence the naughty word.

MS’ upgrade approach is you can keep using your old computer and the new MS OS will be slow as hell so you better upgrade but it will probably be easier to buy a new machine.

Apple’s approach to OS X is easy, all you have to do is throw away your old computer and buy a new one and you’re upgraded!

I believe that was just a “Microsoft user”. Since Windows XP / Vista are popular and easy to use, we get a lot of the flailing morons who don’t know anything about computers. I’ve seen quite a lot of people who think they know what they’re talking about on Windows computers. My laptop was shutting down, and a fellow students suggested “your RAM cards were overheating”.

Popularity sucks, I feel bad for Windows.

During the shareholders meeting, Jobs also entertained the suggestion that Apple could mimic Microsoft’s strategy of offering developing nations Windows Starter Edition — a low cost version of Windows XP as an alternative to the much more expensive Windows Vista. “Do you think we should offer Mac OS 9?” Jobs quipped in response.

Possibly the stupidest thing he could have said in response. Unless of course, it was meant to be sarcastic.

Other companies are more democratic, listening to everyone’s opinions, and the result is bloat and a lack of cohesion.

“Attractive things work better,” says Don Norman, who was vice president of advanced technology at Apple from 1993 to 1998. “When you wash and wax a car, it drives better, doesn’t it? Or at least feels like it does.”
